Intel Core i5 compared to Core I7 Performance and benchmark

New Sandybridge version of Core I5 has been on the market from late 2010. But after some initial troubles, they got to a flying start in April 2011 with new motherboards based on Intel updated B3 series chipset. One thing to note is that even though the laptops are marketed under the bandwagon Core I5. All the laptop Core I5 are only Dual core (as at 2011) while the Core I5 2500 series for the desktop is Quad core. Speed wise also desktop version is about 900MHz faster. So it is not accurate to think you get desktop core I5 equivalent performance from a core I5 Laptop. It is more likely to be in the 50% performance range
What you see on the right is a graph extracted from www.anandtech.com comparing the Core I5 new Sandybridge version and also the older Core I5 750 version as well as the some of the Core I7 series processors.
The graph on the right side is based on figures obtained from www.notebookcheck.net website which has series of benchmarks on Notebook and Laptop performance . Most likely performance you get from a core I5 or core I3 Notebooks is about 60% of the performance of a Core I5 desktop . Even the Core I7 does not come close to the performance of the Desktop Core I5 system. One important thing to notice is that the performance difference between Core I5 Notebooks and Core I3 Notebooks is remarkably similar. There is no appreciable performance difference despite the huge price difference between the Core I5 notebooks and Core I3 Notebooks on the market. Note: The Core I5 2500K and Core I5 2500 both are technically same performance except the 2500K has unlocked multiplier for people who want to overclock the processor.

Old information Core 2 Duo and CoreI5 750 series

With the introduction of Core I5 750 at a great price by Intel in late 2009, the value of the older Core 2 Quad computers have diminished.
Core I5 performs on par with it's more expensive cousin Core I7 on most fronts, and leave the Core 2 quad in the dust.
Also you get the advantages the new platform LGA 1156 with advantage of easy future upgrades.

	Core I7 920 is now discontinued and in that place you can get Core I7 930 if interested in the small gain in the performance. Core I7 930 is 2.8 GHz and should give you performance similar to Core I7 860 listed in the graph. We do have systems based on them if you are interested. Or else you can upgrade to I7 -860 or I7 870 later down the track.
How does Core I5 750 when compared to the news AMD Phenom II X6 in gaming, like Dawn of War II. Core I5 - 750 leaves them in the dust. Only thing which can compete with it in the same price range is the Core I7 870 or Core I7 930, but you need to pay at least $200 -$300 extra for that small performance gain. Better spend that money on a better graphics card.
	Performance of Core I5 (Lynnfield ) in most applications will be similar to Core I7 systems. Sysmark 2007 is a performance benchmarking tool for computers . This benchmark is based on most of the office productivity applications and it is recommended for measuring the performance of computer systems around the world for office applications. You can see most applications will perform better with HT disabled. This may be due to the fact the most current applications are not designed to scale will across 8 processing threads, but more targeted toward 4 core (Quad core) or 4 threads. In time to come applications will catch up to the technology and take full advantage of the Core I5 .
Core I5 system will out perform the Core 2 Quad 3.0 GHz Q9650 and also the AMD Quad core 3.2GHz Phenom II. If you need top performance without breaking the bank, go for the latest Core I5 systems based on Intel Core I5 processor. Adobe PhotoShop is a popular business and graphics applications used by professionals and this benchmark compares how your new computer system perform compared to the other.
